La Dernière Chandelle (The Last Candle)

The sketches

The novel (french only)
(331p. 9.89 mb)

The Last Candle, which was issued in 2003 at 40 copies, will never be reedited. This project was a truly unique experience for all three artists who partook in its creation and the launching party, which took place in a northern Montreal commune (which more than 35 people attended) was a turning point in our existence. Yet the actual work, even though containing certain memorable elements (the Antre, for example, or Luna and Derrek), deserves neither revision nor reprint. The novel is built in a mainly paganish view, with evident taints of sexism and essentialism. The plot, which revolves around the one main character, keeps bringing up the concept of an Earth Mother - a concept we have decided to distanciate ourselves from. Of course, we could also mention the numerous mistakes and typos (even after three corrections!), the bad format, the stereotypes... so many reasons to lay the Last Candle to rest to be remembered as our first serious project.

To honour these efforts, and because we are nostalgic, we wish to offer here the integral novel, in the form it would have taken under a 2nd edition. Moreso, we present for the first time all the drawings of Laëmas.

What is the Last Candle ?

The last candle is militant art project which took place between the august of 2001 and january 2003, as the tragic tale of an innocent dreamer who is exposed to Creation, the seduction of Earth's grace, the truest romance, deep anguish, the destruction of nature, the menace of corruption and the great value of staying true. The Last Candle is a pure statement of the creative impulse : a breath of life and truth, a testament to all dreamers' stuggles. The novel is illustrated by the sketches of Laëmas and a cover from Kayla (as well a one other sketch).
